December suits travelers who prefer milder low-elevation sightseeing to summer heat, but short daylight and cold early starts shape the day. Choose an organized daytime route for varied sights, or a dedicated night tour if you are comfortable with colder conditions and a later return.

Weather: useful averages, not your forecast

The NPS historical table for Furnace Creek gives December an average high of 65°F (18°C) and low of 38°F (3°C). These valley-floor figures do not describe every viewpoint. Higher ground is cooler, wind can change comfort, and an early pickup feels different from a sunny lunch stop. The table uses historical park records, not a prediction for December 2026.

Pack layers rather than one heavy item you cannot adjust. A warm outer layer, covered footwear and sun protection serve different parts of the same day. Put what you need for a viewpoint in a small bag you can reach easily instead of burying it under luggage in the vehicle.

Short daylight changes the itinerary

December has limited daylight around the winter solstice. Exact sunrise and sunset times depend on your travel date, and local terrain changes when sunlight reaches a particular viewpoint. Check a date-specific forecast and sun table before planning photography. Avoid treating an approximate daylight window as a guarantee of how long the tour will spend outdoors.

An early-starting route can make useful sightseeing time, but it asks you to prepare the night before. Mojave Wave: Best of Death Valley lists fall-to-spring departures around 4:30–5:30 AM; the operator confirms the actual pickup. Bindlestiff: Small-Group Day Tour offers a boxed-lunch daytime alternative. Neither should be booked as an independent hiking excursion.

December stargazing: colder, not guaranteed

MYTOURSTORY: Sunset & Stargazing and EMOTION TRIP: Sunset-to-Stargazing stay out for the night sky. The earlier sunset can shift the schedule earlier than summer, but the tour is still a long outing. Cloud cover and moonlight matter, so “winter” is not a promise of better visible stars on every date. Bring layers you can stand still in and plan food because meals are excluded on these listings.

A promotional Milky Way image is not a forecast. If seeing the sky is the whole reason for the booking, understand the weather and cancellation terms before paying. Compare the two products in our stargazing guide to tours.

Christmas and the days around it

Check the calendar for the exact date and party size. A product being listed for the season does not establish a Christmas Day departure, available seats or a restaurant’s holiday service. If a meal is included, ask how the holiday affects it. Reserve a room inside the confirmed pickup area and avoid a late flight arrival before a pre-dawn start.

Do not assume quiet roads or empty viewpoints because it is winter. Holidays can change demand, and a sold-out date on one product does not establish that every operator is sold out. Compare genuinely suitable alternatives rather than switching to a route you do not want simply because a date is clickable.

Road checks and walking plans

Flood damage can persist beyond the storm that caused it. Use NPS conditions close to departure and ask the operator about the route. Mild air temperatures do not remove the need to follow closures. For a shared tour, ask which short walks are planned; a viewpoint stop is not enough time to attempt a longer trail.

Read Las Vegas travel logistics before fixing your return-evening plans. If your dates cross into the next month, the January guide covers the same decisions with January’s historical temperature baseline.
