January offers milder daytime conditions on the valley floor than summer, with cold mornings and cooler high viewpoints. A guided sightseeing day works well if you want transport and a planned route. Sunset and stargazing remain separate choices that add time outdoors after dark.

January temperatures depend on elevation
The historical NPS table gives Furnace Creek a January average high of 67°F (19°C) and low of 40°F (4°C). These are long-term figures drawn from park records, not a forecast for January 2027. They should guide packing, not reassure you that every day will be warm or dry. The higher overlooks can feel substantially colder than the valley floor.
Start with a layer you can remove in sunshine, then add a warm outer layer for pickup and exposed viewpoints. Closed-toe shoes help on uneven surfaces. Sun protection still matters on a cool day. Keep water with you and follow the operator’s advice about what is supplied and what you should carry.
Choose a route around the day you want
Bindlestiff: Small-Group Day Tour is a useful January starting point for a daytime format with boxed lunch. Its checked duration is ten hours, with hotel pickup described for major hotels within three miles of the Strip. The minimum age is seven. Confirm your sandwich choice and hotel rather than assuming the booking form has already passed every detail to the guide.
Mojave Wave: Best of Death Valley offers a longer early-starting alternative, with varied sights and a seasonal meal. Its written description and structured field disagree on the group cap. If a very small party is essential, confirm the departure rather than relying on the most attractive number.
January nights are a separate commitment
The dedicated MYTOURSTORY: Sunset & Stargazing extends the day through sunset into a sky session. It lists seasonal pickup patterns, including a January–February start around 9 AM, but the guide’s final message controls the exact timing. EMOTION TRIP: Sunset-to-Stargazing is another operator to compare and names Amargosa Valley for its stargazing stop.
Both listings exclude meals. Bring what you need for your dietary requirements and ask where food is available along the route. A long wait outside after sunset can feel colder than an active daytime walk. Choose a daytime tour if a late return or standing in the cold would overshadow the experience.
Daylight and photography
Daylight increases through January, so the last week does not run on the same sun schedule as New Year’s Day. Check sunrise and sunset for your actual date. Terrain can shade a viewpoint before the published sunset time, and a shared tour’s route is organized for the whole group. Ask about an essential photograph rather than assuming that the guide will wait for it.
A compact camera or phone can be enough for a sightseeing day. If you carry a tripod or a large bag, ask about vehicle storage. A “scenic” itinerary does not automatically include photography tuition, special equipment or freedom to leave the group.
Access and holiday planning
New Year travel can affect hotel rates, meal service and tour availability. A season-wide calendar is not proof of open seats for your date. Confirm the tour before making an inflexible room booking, and leave a sensible gap between arrival in Las Vegas and an early pickup.
Check the NPS road-status page before departure. Roads damaged by earlier storms can remain restricted even in fine weather. Do not treat a closed road as a shortcut on a self-drive plan, and ask how a guided route is being adapted.
For choosing between products, use the full tour comparison. For your base, see where to stay for pickup. If your visit begins in December, compare the December planning guide.

Questions before you book
Everything you need to know before you book.
January can work well for a prepared visitor. Valley-floor conditions differ from higher viewpoints, and wind or an early start can make warm layers useful.
The night tours offer a way to combine sightseeing and stars, subject to availability and weather. Clear skies and particular astronomical sights are not guaranteed.
Yes. Flood damage and closures can continue after a storm. Check NPS conditions and ask the operator about any must-see stop before departure.
